Celebrating Women - Inspire Inclusion

Happy International Women’s Day to All!

When I opened my Insight Timer app this morning to meditate, Leymah Gbowee's words greeted me:

“If you empower a young woman, you empower a whole community.”

We've all heard this sentiment and seen how it holds true. It's staggering that in 2024, we're still pushing for equality and inclusion for women across various spheres, from education to advancement in the workplace and salaries. This year, the campaign theme for International Women’s Day is 'Inspire Inclusion.' A snippet from the website encapsulates its essence: “When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. Collectively, let's forge a more inclusive world for women.”

In the Caribbean, we're fortunate to witness many examples of women, not only being included but excelling in various areas, including leadership roles. Here in Trinidad and Tobago, our last two presidents have been women. Additionally, one of the most formidable political figures in our region is Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados, whom I jokingly refer to as the president of the Caribbean.

I draw daily inspiration from the remarkable women around me. They inhabit diverse roles and leave indelible marks on our world. Their resilience and determination fuel my own aspirations. My hope is that while we continue to strive for the advancement of women, the younger generation in our region will continue to witness dynamic, strong, passionate, inspirational, and loving examples of womanhood, which will continue to make the presence of women in any space feel natural and essential.

To commemorate this day, I'm sharing some portraits I've captured over the years, celebrating the strength and spirit of inspirational women.
