A 4-Step Self-Care Routine for When You Feel Overwhelmed

Tired, overstimulated, and overwhelmed. That's how I'd describe how I felt when I got home tonight. I was back at the hospital today, and even though I tried to make myself comfortable and go for walks during my visit, it's still an unnerving situation trying to help care for someone, especially when they're in pain. Every time she coughed, said she was in pain, or shared how uncomfortable she was, I could feel my body tighten. By the time I got back home, I was tired and felt rattled. I wanted to just lay on the floor and stare.

Plopping down on a chair, I sat in silence for a while. I had so much to do before I could go to bed. Slowly, an idea came to mind. I'm working on a booklet of wellness practices, and perhaps I could put together a routine of a few practices to try — partly for research, and partly to see how it made me feel afterward. I perked up slightly and headed to the shower.

Below is the practice I did. I'm happy to report that afterward, I felt more awake, balanced, and ready to tackle a couple of things before bed! Check it out below for a little self-care when you need it.

Step 1: Hot shower!

While I showered, I listened to a soothing album of affirmations designed to balance the chakras and help you feel calm. It's 29 minutes long, but I only listened until I was dressed — about 12 minutes in all.

Note: The music I used was “Chakra Healing Affirmations” by Kinder Records and it’s on apple music (click here), but you can find something similar on YouTube. Just choose some grounding music.

Step 3: Yoga Practice | 23 minutes

Step 4: A Vagus Nerve Stimulation Humming Meditation | 5 minutes[link]
