Movement, Massage, and Sound: A Wellness Routine for Overwhelm

In my wellness toolbox, I hope I always continue to include meditation and movement. These are practices I try to do every day, but more than that, I hope I keep reaching for them in moments when I feel overwhelmed and need to ground myself. It always makes me feel better in the end.

This evening I felt out of sorts. I had a meeting coming up in an hour, so I decided to get up from my desk, roll out my mat, and follow a yoga routine. Afterward, I spent some time stretching, using a yoga block to massage and release tension in my neck. The practice wove breathing in with the movement, so by the end I felt energized — breathing deeper, mind noticeably clearer.

After my meeting, still in good spirits, I noticed one side of my neck — and the shoulder on that same side — was feeling really tight. I reached for another tuning-in practice: a self-massage routine for the neck and shoulders. Next time, I'll use some coconut oil so my fingers glide more easily, but even without it, this routine helped a lot. She has you test how far you can turn your neck before and after, and both sides were noticeably improved.

I did one more practice after the massage. I was already feeling great, but figured that after my shower, one more session would be the perfect way to unwind before bed. This one was a sound bath featuring seven different frequencies, each meant to move vibrations through a different chakra. I liked that the practice asked you to tune in and simply notice what you were experiencing with each frequency.

I hope you reach for one of these practices the next time you're feeling overwhelmed. I've linked them all here so you can check them out directly, instead of spending time searching. You can even do them back to back and create your own little mini home retreat.

Enjoy, and I hope you feel refreshed!
