Tell Me About: Your Wedding Dress

I have a wedding coming up. One of my best friends is getting married, and I’m looking forward to so many aspects of the upcoming celebration. We’ll all be on a beautiful Caribbean Island, and it’ll be the most amount of my best friends gathered in one place in countless years. I’m excited to see my friend walk down the aisle and marry her fiancé—taking this step on a new journey together, transforming their partnership into something new. I’m also just looking forward to celebrating their love, honoring their union, and feeling the love of our community that surrounds them. It’s going to be such a fun time! And yes, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing her in the dress.

The dress a bride chooses is always so unique—and almost always a true reflection of her personality and style. Even how the bride acquires the dress is filled with stories and goes along with her vibe. Some brides go from store to store, travelling abroad and trying on dozens of gowns in full Say Yes to the Dress style. Others work with designers—local or international—to create custom pieces, whether in traditional bridal silhouettes or something completely different. And then there are the brides who wear one dress for the ceremony and another for the party (my personal take, if I ever do it).

What I love most is that the dress is almost always a surprise. It’s kept a secret until that moment—when she steps out, glowing, in something that feels just right. I’m always struck by how perfect it is. It’s not just about the dress being beautiful (and it always is)—it’s that it fits her. Her energy. Her mood. Her vibe. I love that moment.

Speaking of dresses I love, I’ve always adored my mum’s wedding dress. Hers had embroidered hibiscus flowers and leaves—flowy, with a dashiki vibe. Her jewelry was simple, echoing the same hibiscus motif. And her hair! It was such a look. She had it cane-rowed with beads interspersed along the braid. She looked stunning. Effortless. Unique. Herself.

So, for the first installment of my series “Tell Me About…” I asked her to tell me the story behind her wedding dress—where she got it, what she was thinking, how she felt wearing it. Join me as we leaf through her wedding album and talk about the details, the memories, and the vibe of that day. I hope you enjoy the story and the photographs of my beautiful mum!
